Neonatal care provides specialized and intensive care measures to improve the health and survival chances of premature and critically ill newborns.
A Neonatologist is always present in the labour ward at the time of delivery. If required, the newborn is immediately shifted to the NICU attached to the Labour Ward. Sometimes the speed with which a baby is treated makes all the difference between joy and despair.
Healthy babies are kept with mother for bonding and for breastfeeding as per the norms of the “Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative”. The Neonatologist on duty visits all the newborns twice a day.
The Neonatology Department is manned by a team of competent doctors and nurses who provide round the clock service, along with specialists like a Pediatric Cardiologist, Ophthalmologist, Pediatric Orthopedician, Pediatric Nephrologist and Pediatric Surgeons who are always on call for problem neonates.
In the case of babies who are in intensive / Special Care, the Neonatologists are very sensitive to the parent’s anxiety and talk at length to them, keeping them informed about treatment and management.
The NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (NICU) at Fernandez Hospital is an air-conditioned 25-bed modern unit, fully equipped with ventilators, TNO Incubators, blue light phototherapy units, cardio-respiratory monitors, pulse oximeters, five parameter non invasive monitors, bedsides a blood gas analyzer and portable NSG x-ray unit. Facilities are also available for invasive procedures like, exchange transfusion, peritoneal dialysis, TPN and central lines. Prematurity is the most common cause of admission to the NICU.
